The largest impact from USTAR is expected to occur once the USTAR faculty are hired and research results are generating commercialization opportunities. However, the USTAR initiative has already had a significant impact on the campus as large groups of faculty develop coordinated research plans with integrated commercialization plans. This coordination is encouraging an unprecedented level of commercial disclosures in areas with high potential to create jobs in Utah.
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH START-UP COMPANIES
Only three years ago the University was averaging 3 start-up companies per year. Both FY2006 & FY2007 demonstrate the significant growth in University start-ups. The 2007 Association of University Technology Managers survey ranks The University of Utah 9th in the country for number of companies formed. The U.S. average number of companies formed by universities in the U.S. was 4 in 2005. In 2006 the U generated 20 companies and in 2007 The University of Utah spin-out 17 new companies.
